China import market:

Polish apple quality can compete with Chilean supply

Last week, the first pallet of Poland gala apple arrived in GuangZhou. The fruit appearance is similar to Chilean first-class gala apple, tasting sweet and sour.

Just before the arrival, Polish apples where heavily promoted in Shanghai and Guangzhou. After initial interest, their marketability depends on their quality, taste and appearance, and, perhaps most important, price.

Currently, the domestic apples are also entering their peak sales period. Shandong apples are competing on price, and Xijiang's sweet crop is popular because of growers not waxing the apple during production. Prices of American imported apples are declining, but still beat local apple varieties and as such sales are slow. Only American green apples are selling at speed.
