Portuguese citrus fruit sales increase in the Algarve

AlgarOrange, the leading association of citrus fruit operators in Portugal, reported a 4.5% increase in citrus fruit sales, reaching over 42 million kilos in the first half of the current campaign. This period, spanning from September 2023 to February 2024, saw a significant rise in sales compared to the previous year's corresponding timeframe.

The Algarve region, known for its robust citrus production, particularly oranges, has maintained a steady supply to both national and international markets, in line with initial projections. The association noted a modest uptick in winter citrus varieties and a more substantial increase in those harvested in spring and summer.

Projections indicate that the citrus season will continue until late September or early October 2024. AlgarOrange highlighted the Algarve's pivotal role in Portuguese citrus production, accounting for 74% of the area and 88% of the output nationwide. The association, under the leadership of José Oliveira, is actively pursuing strategies to mitigate climate change impacts, emphasizing the importance of technology, innovation, and development in sustaining production.
