Soaring temperatures affect Chennai fruit sales

In Chennai, the rise in temperatures has impacted the sales of seasonal fruits, with an increase in prices leading to reduced consumption. The market for fruit sellers has been sluggish. Vendors have noted a significant price hike for watermelon and lemon, attributing the low public consumption to the escalated costs. "Two months ago, lemons were sold for Rs 30 per kilogram and now the rate has tripled to Rs 120 per kg in the market. Now, due to the summer, a greater number of people consume lemons, which has increased the demand and led to an increase in the rate as well," stated S.S. Muthu Kumar, President, Koyambedu Semi Wholesalers Association. He also mentioned that lemons are sourced from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Mysuru. One wholesaler observed that the demand for watermelon rises in this season, but sales are hampered by the scorching sun preventing people from venturing out during peak hours.

Other fruits like jackfruit and sweet lemon have also seen a price surge, while oranges and apples remain consistently high-priced. The onset of the mango season has introduced a temporary spike in prices, expected to decrease over time. Dr Dharani Krishnan, a consultant dietician, highlighted the health benefits of consuming fruits like watermelon and tender coconut water, especially in summer, for hydration and nutritional value, while advising diabetic patients on moderate consumption of certain fruits to manage sugar levels.
