California allocates $22.1 million towards combating fruit fly infestations

In a recent development, California has allocated $22.1 million towards combating fruit fly infestations, following legislation signed by Governor Newsom. The decision was influenced by a bipartisan request led by Assemblymember Eloise Gomez Reyes, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the outbreak. A collective appeal from agricultural stakeholders, including CCM, further underscored the necessity of this funding.

Assemblymember Reyes has also introduced AB 2827, aimed at mandating state action against invasive species detrimental to California's agriculture. Jacob Villagomez, CCM's Director of Governmental Affairs, supported the bill in a presentation to the Assembly Agriculture Committee. The initiative has garnered appreciation from CCM for Reyes's leadership in pest eradication efforts, and from the Governor for the financial commitment to tackle the fruit fly challenge.

The severity of the situation is highlighted by over 554 square miles of quarantine zones established in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, significantly affecting citrus growers. CCM President/CEO Casey Creamer expressed confidence in the eradication and prevention measures proposed in AB 2827, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts.
