Vince Persoon, Beta Best Produce:

"Limited availability drives up the price of Peruvian pomegranates"

This week, the first Peruvian pomegranates of the Wonderful variety have arrived at Beta Best Produce in Poeldijk. "Production is about 30% lower compared to last year. This is currently resulting in high prices, which, depending on the size, range between 11 and 13.50 euros," says Vince Persoon.

In 2022, the Peruvian grower Complejo Agroindustrial Beta established a European sales office on Dutch soil, named Beta Best Produce. The company has an area of 5,500 hectares for the cultivation of blueberries, grapes, asparagus, avocados, citrus, and pomegranates, making it one of the largest cultivation and export companies in South America. In addition to the sales office in the Netherlands, the grower also has distribution locations in the United Kingdom and, since this year, in Spain. The first pomegranates are expected in the United Kingdom and Spain in weeks 17 and 18.

The harvest season for Peruvian pomegranates lasts until the end of April. "Pomegranates are increasing in popularity. They are also widely processed into juice. We mainly export the larger sizes to Eastern Europe. The smaller sizes usually find their way to Northern Europe and Scandinavia," says Vince. "Due to the lower availability, prices are expected to remain at a high level this season. This year, we are selling the bulk through day trading."

"This week, we are also receiving the first green Spanish asparagus from our partner Giménez & Beta Internacional. From week 18, we will also start receiving the first Zutano avocados from our parent company in Peru," says Vince. He is very satisfied with the developments of the Dutch sales office. "Because our parent company has a lot of its own cultivation, we are interesting for many parties, both wholesalers in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe."
