Following a complaint, the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) conducted an inspection at a Maxima supermarket on Grostonas Street. The inspection revealed mislabeled Polish cucumbers, erroneously tagged as products of Latvia. The PVD confirmed the actual origin of the cucumbers as Poland, prompting the seller to pledge an immediate correction of the mislabeling. An administrative violation procedure has been initiated as a result. Further inspections in other Maxima stores across Latvia did not uncover similar issues.
The PVD emphasized its routine monitoring efforts, which include both scheduled and unscheduled inspections of retail outlets. Special attention is given to the accurate labeling of fruits, vegetables, and berries during the spring season, a period marked by heightened vigilance against the misrepresentation of the origin of produce. This practice aligns with the PVD's commitment to ensuring transparency and integrity in the representation of local and imported fresh produce.
