Ed Olivier, Edfruit:

"Quality of Chilean berries very average, but prices good"

A very average quality and high prices, that's the blueberry market in a nutshell. "It isn't generally an outstanding business. This is why a number of Chilean suppliers have stopped," says Ed Olivier of Edfruit. He expects to be able to supply Chilean blueberries for another four or five weeks.

"This week was a crazy week in the blueberry trade. Because a few large retailers had blueberries on offer, they ran out and there was a shortage. The prices shot up, we were able to make one to one and a half Euro per box more," says Ed. He expects this price level to stabilise over the coming weeks. "At the moment there is actual rubbish present on the English market, but I expect it to be gone by the end of the week."

"You won't hear anyone complaining about this price level. The demand is good. I mainly supply to German, Italian and Scandinavian customers. At the moment it's all Chile on the auction, as Peru is off the market. The South African season is also mostly over, but the first shipment from Mexico is expected for the coming week."
