Organic black garlic now available

Kuperus Foods from Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, has been supplying black garlic to the market for several years. The company supplies the black garlic in bulbs, peeled cloves and pulp. This type of garlic is unique in that it is odourless. This year, the company introduced the organic variant at the AGF Detail. “This unique product is bought in Spain, after which the bulbs go in the oven in our factory in the UK in order to ferment into those sweet, soft and black cloves,” says Anne Kuperus. The company mostly supplies to wholesalers, who in turn supply the catering industry and retail trade.

“We were asked by our customers to also supply organic black garlic, so we started working on that. A few weeks ago, we also began to supply the black garlic in an organic variant,” says Kuperus. “We are very enthusiastic about this line, because we think we could definitely score in the organic sector with this healthy product. It is no different from the conventional garlic regarding flavour and looks, but we will reach a larger target audience with it. Prices are slightly higher than those of the conventional garlics.”

“Black garlic is healthier than white garlic because it has double the amount of antioxidants. No flavouring or preservatives were added to the product, the only ingredient is garlic. Because of the soft, gelatinous texture and rich flavour, it can be used as an ingredient or eaten as a healthy snack. We are the only Dutch importer of this product, and we see the market growing continuously. Delicatessens also know what to do with this product. As I always say: less odour but more flavour,” Kuperus concludes.
