Business Development Lead, Netherlands / Benelux

Carbo Culture is seeking a Business Development Lead in the Netherlands to join the team!

We are seeking an ambitious Business Development Lead to strengthen our commercial team in the Netherlands and lead our Project Development activities. In this challenging role, you will be responsible for managing, developing, financing, and realizing biochar projects from start to finish. You are a natural connector who can build relationships with all stakeholders, from entrepreneurs and provinces and ensure that projects are managed in a coherent way.

We’re looking for someone who understands the professional horticulture  market well, who is a driven self-starter who thrives in an area with little direction or oversight, and who can be relied on as a Carbo Culture representative in international, often complex negotiations. You can effectively communicate and manage mutually beneficial partnership models.

You are experienced in leading projects, you’re a fast learner, great collaborator and love working in a startup team in a hands-on environment. This role is remote for now, and working within European time zones. Regular travel to our demo site / next sites, as well as partners’ sites expected in the future.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead Generation: Continuously identify new opportunities for biochar projects across the Netherlands. Build a strong pipeline and identify suitable locations, feedstock sources, and partners.
Feasibility Studies: Lead the development of feasibility studies, including creating business cases, defining roles & responsibilities, timelines, budgets, and permitting strategies.
Permitting: Oversee the acquisition of necessary permits, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and site surveys. Initiate contact with relevant authorities.
Partnerships & Contracts: Build strong relationships with partners and authorities, ensuring all required contracts and permits are secured in a timely manner.
Financing: Play a key role in attracting funding for biochar projects.
Technical Design: Collaborate with the engineering team on the development of a preliminary and final technical design for the biocarbon facility.
Project Execution: Provide day-to-day oversight of biochar project execution, ensuring partners and authorities fulfill their commitments.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

Your experience and skills

  • Native Dutch speaker with fluent English
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in business development in the agriculture, preferably link to the energy use
  • Excellent communication and networking skills
  • Strong analytical and financial acumen
  • Knowledge of Dutch permitting and subsidy regulations
  • Stress-resistant and results-oriented
  • Reside in close to Westland or in the southern Netherlands
  • Strong networks in relevant industries: professional horticulture
  • Project development experience in a relevant industry in multimillion scale, eg with the bioprocess industry or in energy / other infrastructure projects

Your characteristics to bring to the team

  • You are comfortable creating new concepts and with creative problem solving, not working from a pre-existing project playbook
  • Always on the hunt for a better deal, a new way of doing things, improving the current
  • Ability to act without direction and bring deals forth
  • You’re a self-starter, builder and can think on your feet
  • You are eager to learn
  • If work needs to be done, you’ll do it even if it’s not your responsibility
  • You are deeply passionate about climate tech and about working for a live-able planet in 2050

Not necessary, but we’d love it:

  • Experience working in a startup-like, fast-moving organization
  • Experience in a leadership / critical position
  • You’ve seen what “great” looks like in a company
