Provisional application in April

European Parliament approves the trade agreement with Canada

Yesterday, the European Parliament adopted the Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada, which could be applied provisionally as early as April this year. Spanish exports of fresh fruits and vegetables to Canada up to November 2016 stood at 37,090 tons worth 46.5 million euro.

Following the adoption of European Parliament, with 408 votes in favor, 254 against, and 33 abstentions, the agreement may enter into force "on the first day of the second month following the date on which both parties notify the completion of the internal ratification procedures, which the members of the European Parliament expect will be as soon as April 1, 2017." However, the final application of the agreement will take place when the parliaments of all member states ratify it, as specified by the information of the European Parliament and the European Commission,

Canada will eliminate tariffs for chapters 07 and 08, which include fresh fruits and vegetables, once the Agreement enters into force. According to FEPEX, Spanish exports to this market should increase once the agreement is fully ratified and the tariffs are dismantled.

Spanish exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to Canada until November 2016 amounted to 37,090 tons, i.e. 15% less than in the same period of 2015. The value, which amounted to 48.5 million euro, remained unchanged from the same period of 2015, according to data from the Directorate General of Customs processed by FEPEX.

Community exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to Canada until September 2016 totaled 39,914 tons, 2% more than in the same period of 2015. The main fruit exports were of kiwi, citrus, and apple. Community imports of fresh fruit and vegetables from Canada in the same period stood at 945 tons, i.e. 4% less than in the same period of 2015, according to data from Eurostat.
