Pratts is branching out into produce

"We already have expertise in customs clearance, product storage and adding value"

UK banana importer Pratts is well known in the business of bananas and have more recently moved into the logistical sector. The company is branching out again in a new direction.

Pratts were at Fruit Logisitca for the first time and we caught up with Simon Trewin, who told us about the new direction which Pratts was taking.

Ophelia Wells, Simon Trewin and Fernanda Guajardo at the SH Pratt stand for the first time in Berlin.

"The company is going on a journey of development," explains Simon. "We are going from a family owned banana company to a broader based entity. Coming here to Berlin gives us a good opportunity to let the world see what we do."

Pratts will remain a banana company at its core, but already have a large logistical business which has over 50 vehicles and is still growing.

"We are looking for new opportunities in fresh produce, but probably away from Luton which is where we are currently based," said Simon. "This would hopefully give us business opportunities allied to efficiencies and will make an attractive proposition for clients. For instance, anything in produce which we can manage through a port, we already have expertise in customs clearance and product storage as well as adding value to products by repackaging and re-engineering them."

The intention is to repack or re-engineer at the port without first having to travel inland and then back again, according to Simon.

"Pratts will have three complimentary parts to the business which we can use to broaden our horizons and broaden our risk while still concentrating on our core business of bananas," explains Simon. "We have a growth strategy in place, and some great people in place to carry it out.
