Unitec technological solutions

An increased turnover in 2016 (€85 million against the 72 of the previous year), availability in 60 countries worldwide and 90% of the business made abroad. These are just a few of the figures presented by Unitec President Angelo Benedetti during Fruit Logistica in Berlin.

Angelo Benedetti and Enrico Turoni during the Unitec press conference in Berlin.

"We can definitely call ourselves a Group, as we widened our scope and our innovative solutions of UT Instruments, a company established in 2016 by Unitec, Tr Turoni and Unisorting, thanks to the acquisition of Longobardi, Sado and Sammo."

UT Instrument manufactures portable technological devices to measure the quality of the fruit along the entire chain.

Unisorting produces specialised technologies for the processing of apples, dates, onions, potatoes, mangoes, avocados, citrus fruit and asparagus. It improves sorting, thus making Unitec's range even more complete.

For over 90 years, Unitec has been supporting packing stations all over the world, providing technologically advanced solutions to improve their business, reduce costs and increase revenue.

"Our objective for 2017 is the same. Our systems enable the elimination of defective produce from packaging lines and the classification of quality according to various parameters. It's not true, for example, that fruit with lower Brix levels is not suitable for specific uses. What is important is to distinguish it and to take decisions based on objective elements."

The smiling faces of Unitec clients are testament to a job well done.

According to Unitec President, what is important for a packing station is to be reliable. "Batches do better when they are uniform, when they are not compromised by produce that could be destined to the processing industry."

Enrico Turoni, from TR Turoni, talked about the advantages deriving from using electronic tools to verify the quality parameters of fruit before harvesting. "Thanks to their portability, speed, dedicated software and Bluetooth technology, these devices enable producers to obtain the best results, optimising time and resources and providing clients (retailers and markets) with the produce required. The objective is, as always, customer retention."

The leading technological solutions provided by Unitec
At Fruit Logistica, Unitec presented three solutions for the sorting and packaging of produce: Cherry Vision 2, Blueberry Vision and Cluster Cutter for Rainier cherries.

Cherry Vision 2
It's the innovative system developed and manufactured entirely by Unitec for the electronic sorting of cherries.

During the last season, Cherry Vision 2 contributed to the success of Melinda cherries. By using Cherry Vision 2 during sorting, the company was able to increase its profits, thanks to a better quality, and to do well in a season characterised by weather and insect (Drosophila suzukii) problems. €0.60 saved on labour costs and +€0.30/kg on the price paid to producers.

Blueberry Vision
It is the pioneer technology for the sorting and classification of blueberries.

It is also the first system that analyses different parameters on the entire surface of blueberries without damaging them. It considerably improves the reliability of sorting before the fruit is placed on the market. Processing speed = 30 blueberries per second.

Cluster Cutter
A perfect example of innovation dedicated to one single fruit, Cluster Cutter was developed to process Rainier cherries. The innovative stalk separator is patented and manages to separate the fruit from the stalk without damaging it. A true "revolution" in terms of cost reduction and improved efficiency thanks to the high automation of the lines. Just think that the stalk used to be removed by hand!
