September orchard update with Dave Gleason
As Chief Horticulturist of Kershaw Companies, a member of Domex Superfresh Growers®, Dave Gleason is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as harvest is about half-way over. We are currently in the midst of the Red Delicious and Granny Smith harvest. Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, and Gala trees are all harvested for the season. Looking ahead, we still need to harvest Fuji, Cripps Pink, and our signature, proprietary apple, the Autumn Glory®.
The Autumn Glory is the pride and joy of the Superfresh Growers family of growers. “For us,” Gleason says, “we want to see an apple that, first of all, is very pleasing to the person who eats it. We want an apple that gives a consistent, wonderful and exciting eating experience.” For Dave Gleason, and our growers, raising Autumn Glory trees has been a journey of finding the perfect variety, “one that works for the growers from farm all the way to the finish line.” Gleason continues, “we look for a variety that is easy to grow, productive, grows to the right size, is attractive and catches the eye, and an apple that consistently gives the right eating experience.” The Autumn Glory apple is the perfect apple for our growers.
With warm autumnal-like flavors of caramel and cinnamon, the apple delivers on the Autumn Glory tag line of “Experience Autumn All Year. ™” Superfresh Growers are in their first stages of the Autumn Glory harvest now. The apple will be shipped to retailers this fall.
