Panama: Onion producers are sued because they lowered their prices

A group of producers from the highlands of Chiriqui felt sad and disappointed after they received a summons made by the Fourth Circuit Court of Chiriqui for alleged unfair competition, stated Augusto Jimenez, the president of the Association of Producers from the Highlands.

According to Jimenez, it is depressing that the producers be prosecuted this way.

The problem arose after producers decided, at the general assembly of July 26, to remain in a state of alert because of the recent onion import measures, and priced a quintal of onions at 65 dollars.

At the time, the administrator of the Authority for Consumer Protection and Defense of Competition (Acodeco), Oscar Garcia, said that onion producers were violating competition law, and could be sanctioned.

Later, producers complained about the arrival of more than 62,000 quintals of imported onions, which they considered as a direct attack on the national production of onions.

Jimenez asked President Juan Carlos Varela to dismiss Garcia from the Acodeco, as he would not desist from the lawsuit.

He said they still hadn't seen the lawsuit and that their lawyers would review the document on Tuesday because the summonses were not sent to the Association of Producers' legal person, but to seven members of the Association's board.
