Ambrosia is most preferred - more boutique

US apple exports to China and Vietnam going strong

Right now, the North American continent mainly ships Washington apples to China and Vietnam. Within a few weeks, exports from Canada will start as well. “Ambrosia is the number one preferred variety and best-selling apple in Vietnam today,” says Rick Chong with Sutherland S.A. Produce. “We don’t have enough Ambrosia apples to meet demand.” The Vietnamese are willing to pay a lot of money for Ambrosia apples. “The country is the choosiest buyer in the world and has higher standards than China,” mentioned Chong.

Increase of Canada’s Ambrosia acreage
Chong expects Ambrosia acreage in Canada to increase significantly in the next three years. Today’s volume of Ambrosia amounts to approximately 800,000 boxes and he foresees that number to increase to 1.5 mln. packed boxes within seven years. Canada's cooler climate produces a high-color Ambrosia that is a fantastic eating apple.”

In addition to Vietnam and China, Hong Kong also offers opportunities for future North American exports when supplies are more plentiful. Ambrosia is a very popular apple there as well.

Gala and Fuji are the number two and three most popular apple varieties in Asia. However, supply of these varieties is abundant. “Gala is available in so many countries,” shared Chong. New Zealand competes with Chile and the variety is also grown in Washington. It is just more competitive whereas Ambrosia is more of a boutique apple.
