Delivery service 'exposes' UK consumers to healthy eating

A Surrey based husband and wife are offering area residents the chance to order fresh fruit and vegetable from the farm. Customers are able to choose between 11 different boxes based on themes such as fruit for office, juice (incl. both fruit and veg), salad only, soup ingredients, big apple box, fruit and veg box, fruit only, veg only, juicing & detox, weaning box and juicing oranges.

"We are situated in Surrey and only deliver in Surrey and thus our carbon footprint is kept low. The additional benefit to our customers is that we are a small business which employs local people and buys locally and therefore supports the local economy, all of which we feel is very important." said Chris Bavin, co-owner of the Naked Grocer.

This is not Chris' venture in fresh produce, he has always been active in the industry, importing and selling to the wholesale markets across the UK.

The Naked Grocer, a multi-award winning retail business which opened in 2009, was the brain child of Chris and Millie. They are extremely proud of the fact that the Naked Grocer was a finalist three years in a row, and the winner two years running of the prestigious “Independent Retailer of the Year” award.

“Eat Well for Less”
As if running a successful fruit and veg delivery service wasn't enough, Chris has also added co-presenting to his list of achievements, on BBC1's “Eat Well for Less” with Greg Wallace.

Between 4 to 5 million people have been tuning in weekly to watch the dynamic duo. The premise behind the show is to tackle a family's expensive shopping habits, showing them how they can eat better quality food while saving money on their shopping bills.

"The show isn't all about just buying cheaper, as the supermarket price wars are also responsible for driving down quality to keep prices low. The cost of food is becoming more relevant to us all, but one of the things we often say on the show is that you should save where you can, and in other areas spend more," said Chris.

"For me, it's all about raising awareness of fresh produce and increasing our consumption, especially in the younger generation – we all have a responsibility towards them. It doesn't matter where you are on the socio-economic scale, most of us aren't eating enough fresh fruit and veg. A lot of poorer families don't have enough exposure to fresh produce, but the problem isn't exclusive to them."
