The second crop of figs in Arizona is wrapping up, and production in California is set to ramp up soon. California's first crop was early this year, and Arizona production is set to wind down as the second California crop comes into production.
“We had Black Mission figs from Arizona for about 10 days in May, and we'll have second season figs through the month of July,” said Steve Matych of Regatta Tropicals. First season figs in Arizona usually arrive in mid-May and then California production starts in June, though warm weather in California had some growers there harvest figs as early as May. The second crop in Arizona comes in at the start of July and California usually follows late in the month.
“Volume and quality here were excellent,” said Matych. “We'll probably finish up at the end of the month. We could probably go another week, but my labor costs are high so we tend to get out as California figs move into the market.”
Prices were high earlier this month, though the market has come down in recent days. Matych saw prices get as high as $42.00 per tray, though they have since settled into the $26.00 to $30.00 range.
“With California starting it just moves the market down,” he explained.
