Canada quintuples Spanish pepper imports

Germany has tripled its purchases of peppers from Spain over the last ten years, while Canada has quintupled them (although its volume is much smaller), according to data from the statistical service Estacom (Icex-Tax Agency), with code 070960 of the Tariff Integrated of the European Communities (TARIC).

The Spanish export of peppers to Germany has gone from 87.41 million kilos in 2007 to a total of 242.4 million in 2016. Over the same period, the volume shipped to Canada has gone from 0.94 to 4.92 million kilos.

The number of pepper exporting companies has also risen over the last ten years, from 578 to 719.

The total volume of peppers exported in 2016 reached 733.74 million kilos; 93.57 percent more than ten years ago, when Spanish pepper exports stood at 379.05 million kilos.

The value of pepper exports has been the highest in history, reaching 990.17 million Euros; 93.57 percent more than in 2007, when the value of the shipments stood at 511.63 Million euros, despite the fact that the average price has been the same.

Countries
Germany purchased a total of 242.4 million kilos of Spanish peppers in 2016, thus absorbing 33.03 percent of Spain's exports. The total value of pepper sales to Germany in 2016 was 347.15 million Euro, with an average price of 1.432 Euro per kilo; the highest of the five main customers. A total of 254 Spanish companies made shipments to Germany.

France remains the second largest buyer of Spanish peppers. In 2016, it purchased a total of 110.85 million kilos worth 143.1 million Euro at an average price of 1.291 Euro per kilo. The number of companies that sold peppers to France in 2016 was 348.

The Netherlands ranks third among Spanish pepper customers. Last year it bought a total of 80.08 million kilos, for which it paid 106.71 million Euro at an average price of 1.332 Euro/kg. These operations were carried out by 191 companies.

The fourth position is for the United Kingdom, which bought 72.37 million kilos of peppers worth 91.8 million Euro at an average price of 1.268 Euro per kilo. A total of 165 companies sold peppers to the UK.

The fifth largest customer of Spanish peppers in 2016 was Italy, which bought a total of 57.08 million kilos worth 65.23 million Euro at an average price of 1.143 Euro per kilo. Sales of Spanish peppers to Italy were made by 206 companies.

In the case of Canada, whose purchases of Spanish peppers have increased five-fold, from 0.94 million kilos in 2007 to 4.92 million in 2016, the value of the purchases in 2016 stood at 9.79 million Euro, with an average price of 2 Euro per kilo.
