Onion farmers in Pampanga are anticipated to see an income increase following the Department of Agriculture's announcement of constructing a 20,000 bag capacity onion cold storage in Barangay Cabalantian, Bacolor. The P41.5-million facility aims to enhance onion storage, maintaining quality and preventing decay.
Upon completion in October 2024, the facility will be managed by the Bacolor Onion Farmers Association, comprising 24 members. Additionally, the Department of Agriculture is addressing pest infestations, notably the onion army worm, by distributing pheromone lures and plant growth enhancers with insecticidal properties. Efforts also include providing buffer stocks of red creole and yellow granex onion seeds and training on pest control. Furthermore, the agency is working on market linkage to facilitate direct sales channels for farmers, aiming to bypass traders for more favorable pricing.
