The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) Fruits market in Maharashtra has experienced a record influx of Alphonso mangoes, with over 65,000 boxes arriving this past Saturday. Market traders anticipate an increase in supply, which could potentially lower prices.
In response to the threat of adverse weather, farmers in Devgad and surrounding mango-producing areas are accelerating their harvesting processes. "With the mercury levels rising, there's a risk of heavy winds and rainfall. Such conditions could lead to losses for farmers," stated Sanjay Pansare, Director of the fruit market at APMC Vashi. He noted the trend of farmers dispatching nearly ripe mangoes irrespective of market demand.
Saturday's record supply is expected to rise further, driven by farmers' efforts to recover approximately Rs 14,000 spent on treating Alphonso trees. Price ranges for Alphonso mangoes currently vary from Rs 200 to Rs 700 per dozen, a decrease from last year's minimum of Rs 700. The retail price spectrum extends from Rs 350 to Rs 1,100 per dozen, influenced by size and quality. Besides Maharashtra, Karnataka is also contributing to the market supply, with its mangoes priced between Rs 60 and Rs 100 per kilogram. Despite the price difference, Maharashtra's Alphonso mangoes are reputed for their superior taste over Karnataka's offerings.
