In Penang's Balik Pulau, preparations are underway for the durian season, with nets strategically placed beneath durian trees to collect the anticipated fruit fall. Durian farmer Tan Chee Keat predicts the season's onset by the end of the month, expecting an initial modest yield followed by a peak period in mid-May.
Balik Pulau, known for its durian orchards, produces sought-after varieties such as Black Thorn, Musang King, and Ang Heh (Red Prawn), attributed to the area's conducive soil and geographical conditions. Tan is optimistic about this year's harvest, noting an unusual abundance of flowers on the trees, suggesting a potentially extended season until September. In preparation, fertilization efforts are underway, despite challenges posed by the hot weather, including the need for irrigation. Concerns have been raised by other orchard owners, such as Tan Hock Hoe and Kenny Soong, regarding the impact of the hot spell on fruit development and the potential delay in the season's start. However, hopes remain high for a successful harvest.
