A delegation from Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture, comprising three inspectors, recently conducted a two-day visit to the fruit fly-free zone in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The purpose of their visit was to assess the quality of melon plantations, with an eye towards finalizing an export agreement for the fruit to Malaysia.
The inspection covered various aspects of pest prevention and control, with local production entities showcasing their methodologies. Officials from IDIARN and the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture were present to guarantee the adherence to phytosanitary standards necessary for certification. The visit emphasized the importance of both field and post-harvest care, particularly in packaging facilities.
Under the guidance of Magnos Lacerda, Director of Defense and Plant Health Inspection, and State Agricultural Inspector Sterllênia Damaceno, the Brazilian team provided comprehensive insights, leaving the Malaysian inspectors confident in the potential partnership. "This visit was extremely important to establish a valuable external relationship with Malaysia, reinforcing the reputation of our agriculture in the world, valuing the work carried out here and boosting the economy of RN", Director Magnos commented.
Should the partnership proceed, Malaysia will become the latest country to enter into an export agreement with Rio Grande do Norte, joining a list that includes the European Union, China, Chile, the United States, Argentina, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Dubai, among others.
